Kyushu Electric Power announced a 20-year agreement to purchase up to 1 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually from U.S.-based Energy Transfer, starting around 2030. The LNG will be supplied from the company’s Lake Charles project in Louisiana. The deal, Kyushu Electric’s first long-term LNG contract with a U.S. supplier, is structured as FOB (free on board), allowing for flexible timing and resale options.
The move aims to diversify supply sources; about 70% of Kyushu Electric’s 2.59 million tons of LNG purchased in FY2024 came from Australia. The utility had considered investing in the U.S. project but opted not to proceed. Source: Kyushu Electric Power / Energy Transfer
