Kyushu University Uncovers Flu’s Cell-To-Cell Spread Mechanism

A research group led by Kyushu University has identified a previously unknown mechanism by which influenza spreads between cells. The team discovered that infected cells release ADP, which triggers neighboring cells to increase calcium ion levels—making them more susceptible to infection. The virus exploits this chain reaction, likened to a game of telephone, to accelerate its spread. The findings may inform future antiviral drug development targeting intercellular communication.
