From September 1, the statutory speed limit on many residential roads across Japan will fall from 60 km/h to 30 km/h. The revised rule applies to ordinary roads without a centerline, marked traffic lanes, or a physical median separating opposing traffic. Roads with posted speed-limit signs will continue to follow the displayed limit, even if they otherwise resemble residential streets. General roads with centerlines or physically separated directions of travel will retain the statutory 60 km/h limit unless signs indicate otherwise. The nationwide change is intended to improve safety on narrow streets and reduce collisions involving pedestrians and cyclists.
