Miare Festival
~

The Autumn Grand Festival at Munakata Taisha marks the season when the three Munakata goddesses are brought together once a year. On the first day, the Miare Festival features a spectacular maritime procession, with more than 100 fishing boats flying colorful tairyo-bata flags as they escort sacred objects from Oshima toward the mainland.

The flotilla departs Oshima Port at 09:30 and arrives at Konominato Port at around 10:40. The sight of the brightly decorated fleet filling the waters off Munakata is one of the festival’s most distinctive scenes.

The Autumn Grand Festival continues for three days. The second day includes a yabusame horseback archery ritual and an offering of Shuki Chiho Fuzokumai, while the final day features Yukyu-mai and other ceremonial performances. Held in gratitude for safety at sea, abundant catches and a successful harvest, the festival offers a glimpse into Munakata’s longstanding spiritual traditions on both sea and land.
