Korokan, an ancient gateway for diplomacy and trade, comes to life in light on autumn evenings at the Fukuoka Castle Ruins. Illuminated installations, play areas and food stalls introduce visitors to the history of this diplomatic guesthouse, which served as a link between Fukuoka and East Asia for around 400 years.
Korokan welcomed envoys from the Chinese mainland and Korean Peninsula and provided lodging for Japanese missions preparing to sail to Tang-dynasty China.
Highlights include the illuminated reconstruction of the northern compound’s East Gate, a light installation approximately 6 m long modeled on a ship used by Japanese missions to Tang China, and a giant balloon resembling a full moon. A square with illuminated play equipment and a row of food stalls inspired by Heian-period banquets invite visitors to explore Korokan’s past through light, play and food while strolling through the park at night.
