Canal City Hakata’s East Building reopens on Sep 4, 2026 after being closed since May 2023. Across its three floors, 16 stores bring together furniture and interiors, fashion, lifestyle goods, Kyushu food, cafes, craft beer and entertainment.
Fukuoka Now toured the renewed building ahead of the public opening. Here are some of the places that caught our attention.
Eggs ‘n Things Returns to Fukuoka
The Hawaii-born breakfast restaurant Eggs ‘n Things opens on the second floor, marking its return to Fukuoka after about seven and a half years. Its former Daimyo location had a loyal following, and the familiar stacks of pancakes are now back in the city.
The menu ranges from signature pancakes to Eggs Benedict, loco moco and garlic shrimp, covering breakfast, lunch and dinner. Opening from 9:00 makes it useful not only during a shopping trip, but also for breakfast around Canal City.

A Fukuoka-Style Yatai Experience at LAKOLE
Occupying the second and third floors, LAKOLE combines men’s, women’s and children’s fashion with household goods, food and other everyday items. This is one of the brand’s largest stores in Japan.
The most distinctly Fukuoka feature is a yatai-inspired eating area. Visitors can choose a regional instant noodle, prepare it at an automatic cooking station and eat it at the counter. It is a playful nod to Hakata’s famous nighttime food stalls.

From Attack on Titan to Hita at Zone8
Spanning floors 1 to 3, Zone8 combines an immersive theater, merchandise and a collaboration cafe. The second floor includes a temporary Attack on Hita information center introducing Attack on Titan-related attractions in Hita, Oita Prefecture, while the third floor houses the collaboration cafe. Limited merchandise is also available.

Regional Finds at GOOD MARKET KYUSHU
GOOD MARKET KYUSHU has relocated from the main Canal City complex to the East Building’s second floor. The food-focused select store brings together about 300 products from roughly 70 businesses across Kyushu’s seven prefectures and Yamaguchi.
The shelves cover seasonings, Japanese tea, sweets, dried noodles and prepared foods. Examples include stick-pack Yame tea from Fukuoka, hand-stretched Goto udon from Nagasaki, yuzu kosho miso from Oita and rice-seasoning mixes from Kagoshima. It works equally well for travelers looking for a Kyushu souvenir and local residents wanting something new for the kitchen.

Ito King’s First Dorayaki Cafe
On the first floor, Fukuoka strawberry specialist Ito King has opened its first cafe built around dorayaki and original dine-in dishes. Along with Amaou strawberry sweets, the menu includes an unusual strawberry-and-egg sandwich.

Wagyu and Local Craft Beer at W&B
Also on the first floor, W&B -WAGYU & CRAFT BEER- by AOZORA BREWERY pairs steak with craft beer from the Fukuoka brewery. An original beer available only here adds a local touch, whether stopping for a full meal or a drink between stores.

More Stores in the East Building
The complete 16-store lineup also includes LOWYA on floors 1 to 3; niko and …, GEAR’s JAM, JINS, 2nd STREET, On Time and Mister Donut on the first floor; 3COINS+plus on the second floor; and coca and GLOBAL WORK on floors 2 and 3.
With the renewal, the East Building offers more than shopping. Visitors can eat, drink, try something hands-on and discover products and destinations from elsewhere in Kyushu. After a three-year closure, this link between Canal City, Gionmachi and the old Hakata district is active again, with a noticeably broader mix of reasons to walk through.
