A large-scale fireworks display will be held this May beside the Chikugo River to celebrate the start of ukai (cormorant fishing) season. Locals employ this traditional method of fishing to catch ayu (sweetfish). Approximately 3,300 fireworks will be let off from the riverbank during the annual riverside festival. The light from the display will be reflected in the water and illuminate the night sky. Fishing season on the river starts from May 20 and has become a feature of the Summer months in the Chikugo area. *Please be aware that no fishing will take place on the day of the fireworks display.
