Dainyu Tug-of-War

This traditional event has been held for over 160 years in the Dainyu district of Itoshima. On August 15th, during Obon, vines are collected from the mountains to create a thick, long rope. In front of Dainyu Hakusan Shrine, the local guardian deity, a tug-of-war is held between two teams: the young men’s group and the combined group of middle-aged men and children. After three rounds, the rope is cut in two, and from the winning team’s (the “Hotoke” team) rope, a ring is made for a children’s sumo tournament.
