Entomology at Kyushu University has a history of over 100 years and still plays a central role in Japanese insect research. In taxonomy, it has published numerous papers and produced many of Japan’s leading researchers. Taxonomic papers usually use hand-drawn drawings to describe morphology, and researchers put their heart and soul into their drawings. The exquisite original drawings “Miniature” have a high artistic value as well as scientific significance. This exhibition displays original drawings preserved at Kyushu University and publications (e.g. illustrated books) by successive generations of Kyushu University researchers. In addition, Gakken’s Pictorial Book LIVE: Insects, New Edition, which photographed all 2800+ species of insects as they live, has recently been published, and professors and students from Kyushu University have been involved in its production. We would like to introduce the behind-the-scenes production of the illustrated book.
