Eric Carle: Art, Books, and the Caterpillar
~

Marking the 50th anniversary of the Japanese publication of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, this exhibition looks back on the creative career of Eric Carle (1929–2021), the internationally loved picture-book artist known for his vivid colors and distinctive collage technique. Original artwork and related materials are drawn from the collection of The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art.

Around 180 items are on display, including original illustrations from 27 picture books such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar, dummy books created during the planning stage, painted and patterned papers used for collage, and works from Carle’s years as a graphic designer.

The exhibition reveals how Carle’s familiar images were built by cutting and layering hand-painted paper, offering a closer look at the careful process behind his seemingly simple stories. For children, it is a chance to experience the world of his picture books up close; for adults, it offers a fresh appreciation of his approach to color, composition and design.
