Fishing is a sport enjoyed by over seven million people in Japan and traces its history as a recreational activity to the Edo period. This exhibition introduces the history of recreational fishing in Japan and its accompanying philosophy. One of the highlights is a 400-year-old painting on byobu (paper screen) of people fishing in Kyoto, and a separate painting by Hokusai. Other displays include the world’s first spinning reel and Japan’s oldest gyotaku (fish print with sumi ink). Events and workshops include a kids craft workshop, and the opportunity to fish for crayfish.
