Saul Leiter, a legendary photographer, born in New York, was active as a leading fashion photographer in New York from the 1950s but closed his studio at 58 and disappeared from the public eye. What brought him back was a collection of his work published by Steidel in Germany in 2006. After Saul Leiter died in 2013 at 89, many of his works remained unorganized in his East Village apartment, where he used to live and work in his studio. This exhibition will introduce the unpublished works discovered from this treasure trove of unorganized materials and explore the secrets of the photographer’s creative process through his life-long archives.
As a related event, there will be a special screening (Feb.4 and 5) of the documentary “In No Great Hurry: 13 Lessons in Life With Saul Leiter”, which made his name and work known to a wider audience.
