Fukui Kagura has been designated as an intangible cultural property of Itoshima City. Every year from early morning on New Year’s Day, while the New Year’s Eve bell rings at nearby Daihozenji Temple, people pray for a bountiful harvest, a big catch, safe shipping, the safety of their family, and good health. Then, it is solemnly offered in the bonfire, and amazake and sacred sake are served in the precincts. In addition to powerful dances and dances with comical movements, many elements of other performing arts and different types of kagura, such as dances to pray for peace, are incorporated into the dance, which entertains those who visit the New Year’s visit.
