Fukuoka Tower Tanabata “Milky Way” Illumination

START: Jun 27, 2014 END: Aug 15, 2014

Fukuoka Tower is currently twinkling away at night with a new amanogawa (milky way) illumination! Launched on June 27 in honor of tanabata Japanese star festival, the new display uses 2,700 LED lights to create a shining deep blue sky, complete with three stars symbolizing the tanabata legend of the “Great Triangle of Summer”, and 150-meter tall white milky way. Actress Haruna Kawaguchi made a special guest appearance to launch the illumination on the 27th. A highschool boy who watched the event said that when he saw Kawaguchi smiling in the illuminated rain, she almost seemed “Orihime-like”. This references the story behind tanabata, which celebrates the meeting of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi. According to legend, the Milky Way separates these lovers, and they are allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the lunisolar calendar. The Fukuoka Tower tanabata illumination runs nightly from 19:30 to 23:00 until August 15th.
