The grand opening of Dontaku is heralded by the traditional ‘Hakata Matsubayashi.’ Over two days, the procession features the Three Lucky Gods—Fukurokuju, Ebisu, and Daikoku—majestically mounted on horses, accompanied by a parade of children. Together, they celebrate at over 150 locations, including businesses and enterprises. This ritual is deeply rooted in an ancient folk tradition spanning approximately 840 years, originally celebrated to mark the New Year. Participants adorned in festive costumes would visit local shrines, temples, and homes of historical significance to perform dances and music, offer blessings, and in return, receive gifts. The procession route and current location of the ‘Hakata Matsubayashi’ can be tracked in real-time.
