Hakata Odori

Sixteen geigi from Hakata Kenban, the organization that preserves Hakata’s geigi tradition, come together for this annual year-end stage performance. Accompanied by shamisen, drums and singing, they perform dances that showcase a culture still practiced in Fukuoka today at traditional restaurants, banquets and celebratory occasions.

The program includes “Iwai Medeta,” a celebratory song associated with Hakata, and “Kurodabushi,” one of Fukuoka’s best-known folk songs. From the colorful kimono and precise movements to the shamisen playing and vocals, the performance offers a broad introduction to Hakata’s traditional performing arts.

The first part begins with formal greetings by the mayor of Fukuoka and other local representatives, setting a distinctly Hakata-style year-end atmosphere throughout the theater.
