Every autumn, the canal city of Yanagawa honors its celebrated poet Kitahara Hakushu, who died on November 2. Born into a sake-brewing family in Yanagawa’s Okinohata district, Hakushu left his hometown to pursue poetry, but his affection for Yanagawa remained strong throughout his life, and its waterways and scenery continued to inspire his work.
The festival’s highlight is a nighttime parade of around 40 traditional donko boats decorated with glowing lanterns. The boats travel approximately 4 km along Yanagawa’s canals, from the Hakushu Poetry Monument Park to Yanagawa Bridge. Bonfires illuminate the water, while performances of traditional local arts take place along the route, creating a magical atmosphere. Despite the ceremonial setting, celebrations aboard the boats are lively and festive. Visitors can enjoy the spectacle from the canal banks, but those wishing to experience the parade from the water should reserve early. Boat reservations typically open in summer and are highly sought after.
