Jinkoshiki is a Shinto festival to bring peace and prosperity and to give thanks for an abundant autumn harvest, held since 1101. It is also an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Fukuoka. One of the festival highlights is the goshinyo in which participants clad in historical costumes parade slowly carrying mikoshi (portable shrines), to the former residence of enokisha (okudari no-gi), staying overnight and then returning to the main shrine (onobori no-gi). Don’t miss the Sentomyo on Sep. 25 to see the elegant dance of shrine maidens and the flickering lights of 1,000 candles.
