This 450-year old river-crossing festival is one of Fukuoka’s five major festivals. 10 large mikoshi (portable shrines) are carried by teams of 60 men from Fuuji Shrine across the Hikosan river on the 16th, where they are illuminated overnight, and on the 17th they are taken back across the river.
