Kuroda Family Treasures Exhibition Revisited — Calligraphy, Paintings, and Literary Arts Edition

START: Apr 2, 2024 END: Jun 2, 2024

Explore the evolving cultural pursuits of six generations of Fukuoka domain lords through an exceptional collection of calligraphy, paintings, and literary artifacts. Set against the historical backdrop of feudal governance, the exhibition offers a unique glimpse into the intellectual and artistic legacy of the Kuroda family. The clan’s founder, Kuroda Yoshitaka, also known as Kanbei and later as Josui, was renowned for his strategic acumen and bravery under the banners of Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. From a young age, Yoshitaka engaged deeply with waka poetry and later embraced the popular art of renga. His son, Nagamasa, continued this tradition of poetic appreciation. The artistic journey continued with the fourth domain lord, who pursued painting, and the sixth lord, Tsugutaka, who was adopted by the fifth lord during an illness and developed a profound appreciation for waka, dedicating himself to mastering this poetic form. This exhibition revisits the rich cultural heritage of the Kuroda family, revealing layers of historical and artistic significance.
