Kurume Kasuri is a cotton fabric that has been handed down in the Chikugo region since about 220 years ago. Among the 21 existing Kurume Kasuri studios, Yamaai is known for its Kurume Kasuri which partially uses plant dyeing. This is an exhibition by Mr. Shoji Yamamura, a holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property techniques, and his students. The exhibition features about 300 items of various Kurume Kasuri, including kimono, an introduction to the production process, and happi coats for the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival. Small items such as kimono, bags, drawers, scarves, and hair clips will be on sale, and Mr. Yamamura will give a hand-weaving demonstration.
