On the day before the first day of spring, beans are tossed to shouts of “oniwa soto, fukuwa uchi” (Demons out! Luck in!) in a ritual that wards off evil. The path to the shrine is lined with stalls, and Japan’s biggest Otafuku mask (a good luck talisman) greets you at the shrine’s entrance. Expect big crowds!
