Miyajidake Jinja Iris Festival
~

A seasonal flower festival held at Miyajidake Shrine, famous for its approach road that stretches straight toward the sea. The shrine grounds feature around 100,000 Edo iris plants across approximately 100 varieties, making it one of Kyushu’s best-known iris gardens.

Held during peak blooming season, the Iris Festival includes evening illuminations of the iris garden in front of the shrine’s massive shimenawa rope until 21:00. After sunset, visitors can enjoy the flowers in a quieter, more atmospheric setting. The Edo Iris First Cutting Ritual on May 31 features shrine priests in white ceremonial robes harvesting the irises, accompanied by a sacred dance performance by shrine maidens. On Jun 6 and 7, the Iris Flower Concert adds live music performances to the seasonal display.
