Twice a year, in late February and late October, the setting sun aligns perfectly with the straight path (sando) leading from Miyajihama Beach to Miyajidake Shrine, creating the striking “Path of Light” (Hikari no Michi) over the Genkai Sea. To mark the winter viewing period from Feb 19 to 28, the shrine hosts the “Sunset Path Festival.”
During the festival, special goshuin (shrine stamps) themed on the Path of Light are available. Free viewing seats (limited to 300 people) are set up on the shrine’s main staircase; numbered tickets are distributed from 14:00 near the stairs, with seating beginning around 17:00. Note: From 15:00, the path becomes a viewing area and is closed to through traffic.
A limited number of reserved seats at the top of the stairs, available following a prayer service (¥5,000), can be booked in advance by phone. While weather conditions may affect visibility, this natural phenomenon is one of Fukuoka’s most iconic seasonal sights.
