The popular monthly Nagahama Fish Market Citizen Appreciation Day is back, but December marks the final event until next April. This is a rare chance to enter the market, which is usually closed to the public, and purchase fresh seafood and processed products at great prices. The event draws large crowds each time. In addition to shopping, visitors can enjoy professional demonstrations of fish preparation, hands-on fish filleting experiences, and an impressive live show featuring the dissection of a whole bluefin tuna with a specialized knife, followed by an on-the-spot sale. Activities also include sushi-making workshops for children and a rock-paper-scissors contest (starting at 11 a.m., limited to the first 200 participants) where winners receive mentaiko.
