Nokita Gion Lion Dance Festival

This traditional summer festival has been passed down at Suga Shrine (Suga Jinja) in Nokita, Itoshima, for around 400 years. Believed to date back to the shrine’s founding, it is held annually on Jul 13 to pray for a bountiful harvest, household safety, and good health.

Young men parade from Suga Shrine to Nokita Beach, vigorously swinging red and blue lion heads while chanting spirited calls. Festival stalls line the shrine grounds, adding to the festive atmosphere of this beloved local tradition that marks the arrival of summer in Itoshima.
