Sengai Exhibition

START: Aug 26, 2025 END: Oct 19, 2025

Sengai Gibon (1750–1837), the 123rd head priest of Shōfuku-ji, Japan’s first Zen temple, was an Edo-period Zen monk known for his wit and warm interactions with the people of Hakata. Affectionately remembered as “Hakata no Sengai-san,” he remains a beloved figure today. This autumn, Fukuoka Art Museum will present 36 works by Sengai, selected from its collection of more than 200 pieces. The exhibition highlights his distinctive way of conveying Zen teachings in accessible and often playful forms.
