On the day before the first day of spring, beans are tossed to shouts of “oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi” (Demons out! Luck in!) in a ritual that wards off evil. Sweets and lucky charms are tossed along with the beans so be sure to catch them! The path to the shrine is lined with stalls, and Japan’s biggest Otafuku mask (a good luck talisman) greets you at the shrine entrance. It’s said that passing through the large mouth of the Otafuku mask provides good luck in business and safety within the family. Expect big crowds!
*Please note: Maintain silence when praying at the main shrine. Taking photographs of the shrine altar is prohibited.
