The “Setsubun at Sumiyoshi Shrine” scheduled to be held on February 3rd, 2021 has been canceled due to the declaration of a state of emergency.
The annual Setsubun at Sumiyoshi Shrine will be held next year, 2022. Check back here for details.
Celebrated across Japan, Setsubun marks the beginning of spring with a ritual in which people throw beans at masked demons and chant, “Out with demons! In with luck!” At Sumiyoshi Shrine, beans are tossed to the crowd every hour from 11:00 to 18:00. Some have fukubiki (lucky draw with guaranteed prizes) tickets inside so be sure to catch them! You can also buy fukumame (lucky beans, ¥500) for a chance to join the fukubiki. Tsuina (ceremony to exorcise evil spirits) will also be held at 11:00. A four-eyed creature called hososhi appears to drive out demons.
