Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is undergoing a major renovation of its main hall in anticipation of 2027, marking 1,125 years since the death of Sugawara no Michizane (also known as Tenjin-sama) in Dazaifu. The temporary hall, designed to serve as Tenjin-sama’s residence during the approximately three-year renovation period, was created by Sou Fujimoto Architects, led by renowned contemporary architect Sou Fujimoto. Although it is a temporary structure set to stand until 2027, its unique design has captivated many visitors. Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is hosting a special exhibition showcasing the journey of this temporary hall’s creation, featuring historical illustrations, architectural plans and models exhibited for the first time, and photographs. After viewing this exhibition, visitors are sure to see the temporary hall in a new light.
