Morning Sumo Practice Viewing & Hakata Doll Painting Experience

START: Nov 11, 2024 END: Nov 21, 2024

Each November, during the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament, the Asakayama Sumo Stable, led by former Ozeki Kaio, sets up training quarters at Sumiyoshi Shrine, a sacred site in Fukuoka. Unlike Tokyo, where sumo stables commute to Ryogoku Kokugikan, stables in regional tournaments lodge at temples and shrines, offering unique local experiences.

This exclusive two-hour tour allows you to witness the intense morning practice of the Asakayama Sumo Stable at Sumiyoshi Shrine, explore the shrine grounds, and enjoy a backstage tour of the shrine’s Noh stage (a designated Fukuoka City cultural asset). You’ll also experience a guided Hakata doll painting session, decorating a sumo wrestler figurine, and a brief tea ceremony.

Highlights:
Morning Sumo Practice: Observe the powerful training of Asakayama Sumo Stable up close.
Noh Stage: A historic theater combining traditional Japanese design with Western architectural techniques.
Sumiyoshi Shrine Visit: Explore the shrine’s sacred grounds.
Hakata Doll Painting: Paint your own sumo wrestler figurine, a unique memento.
