For 500 years, two teams of loincloth-clad men have braved the winter cold to scramble for possession of an 8kg wooden ball in this unique New Year’s ritual. Victory for the Beach Team is said to ensure a plentiful catch for the coming year, while victory for the Land Team brings a bountiful harvest.
