The Magnificent Hosomi Collection: Jakuchu, the Rimpa School, and the Fine Art of Kyoto
~

Masterpieces from Kyoto’s Hosomi Museum—often described as a “textbook of Japanese art”—are brought together at Kyushu National Museum. Drawn from a collection built over some 80 years by three generations of the Hosomi family, the exhibition includes gold-accented Buddhist art favored by the first generation and tea ceremony kettles regarded as “iron art.”

Also on display are works avidly collected by the second generation, including pieces by Ito Jakuchu, as well as Edo Rimpa masters such as Sakai Hoitsu and Suzuki Kiitsu. Offering a rare opportunity in Kyushu to experience the diversity of Japanese artistic expression, the exhibition is presented in two phases, with some works rotated between periods.
