“Thinning” is normally an outdoor market which aims to increase public awareness about the problems that Japanese mountains currently face and also to help protect the country’s forests. The name refers to the ecological practice of forest thinning and the timber that can be used from this process. This event focuses on “marine plastic waste” collected at regular beach cleanups. By recycling and selling plastic waste as merchandise, the market is working to protect the marine environment. At the market, eight stores will open stalls to sell works and miscellaneous goods made from recycled marine plastic waste, hold workshops, and sell Itoshima foods such as salt and pudding made by “Mataichi no Shio,” a company is trying hard to eliminate the use of plastics.
