An immersive exhibition of ukiyo-e masterpieces—timeless works that continue to captivate audiences across generations—will be held at JR Hakata City.
Featuring over 300 pieces by iconic artists such as Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Utagawa Hiroshige, Kitagawa Utamaro, Tōshūsai Sharaku, and Utagawa Kunisada, the exhibition reimagines these classic prints through 3DCG animation and projection mapping. Visitors can experience the world of ukiyo-e in a dynamic, multi-sensory environment that brings the art to life in three dimensions.
The exhibition is divided into nine themed zones. In addition to digital installations, original Edo-period prints and reproductions will be on display, along with informative panels that explore the history of ukiyo-e, the cultural backdrop of the Edo period, and the lives of the artists.

Japan Blue Indigo – Experience the world of “Japan Blue,” a shade admired worldwide. Using visual technology, this space recreates fleeting scenes of water—waves, rain, and ripples—captured by ukiyo-e artists long before slow motion or photography existed.

Great View – Ukiyo-e artists had a keen eye for dramatic, picturesque scenes—what today might be called “Insta-worthy.” This zone invites visitors to see the world as they did.

Beautiful – Delve into a world of refined elegance, featuring vibrant floral compositions and delicately rendered portraits of women.

Colorful – A vivid celebration of seasonal transitions, highlighting the natural beauty of flowers, birds, landscapes, and the elements.

Play – A hands-on zone where visitors can interact with the art in playful and engaging ways.

Waterfall – Waterfalls, a universal symbol of beauty, are brought to life in breathtaking scale and detail.

Glorious – Step into the enigmatic world of Sharaku’s close-up actor portraits and explore the true faces behind the performances.

Heroes – A high-energy space showcasing heroic figures radiating boldness and strength.

Elegance – The final zone highlights the refined, stylish side of ukiyo-e that blossomed alongside the world of the samurai. Bright, pop-inspired works representing the popular culture of Edo bring the exhibition to a vibrant close.
