UMUSUNA – Memories before History

START: Jan 26, 2013 END: Jan 27, 2013

For the first time in their 40 year history, the critically acclaimed dance group Sankai Juku are coming to Kyushu. This will be an incredible opportunity to see this startling major dance group. Sankai Juku perform in the style of Butoh, a movement which began in the 1960s and whose name derives from ‘ankoku butoh’ (dance of darkness). Like other Butoh dancers, Sankai Juku have shaved heads, are covered in white powder and are often only partially clothed. Their performances typically feature extreme, absurd environments and playful, grotesque dances. Their latest piece ‘Umusuna – Memories before History’ has been greatly anticipated and concerns birth, life and death. An interview from 2006 can be found with the director here. And more information about the group is available on their website.
