Hakata Gion Yamakasa is a time-honored festival that heralds the start of summer in Hakata. While its origins are subject to various theories, it is widely recognized to have commenced in 1241, and this year marks its 782nd occurrence. Each year, a dedicated Yamakasa event takes place at the “Hakata Machiya” Furusato Kan, a popular tourist destination that recreates the historic dwelling, which functioned as a home, shop, and weaving studio for a Hakata weaver. This year, a collection of photographs dating from the Meiji to Showa periods (1911~1962) related to the Hakata Gion Yamakasa will be showcased.
