This special exhibition showcases one of Japan’s leading collections of ghost and yokai paintings, held by the Fukuoka City Museum. Rather than focusing solely on the supernatural beings themselves, it explores why they were depicted and why they have remained so widely admired, examining Japanese ideas of fear and beauty through around 100 works, mainly from the Edo period.
Highlights include yokai paintings by Ito Jakuchu, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, and Kawanabe Kyosai, as well as a ghost painting attributed to Maruyama Okyo. The exhibition also includes works being shown in Japan for the first time, revealing a world of ghosts and yokai that is frightening, beautiful, and at times humorous.
Interactive digital content by the Fukuoka-based creative group anno lab is also featured, alongside related events such as ghost-story rakugo performances and gallery talks.
During the summer holiday period, the museum will hold “Twilight Museum” evening openings until 20:00 on selected Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, allowing visitors to experience the exhibition in an atmospheric setting after dusk.
