This small, blue and cream-painted building along the Nakagawa River seats five at the counter downstairs and 11 at tables upstairs. Owner and chef Mr. Kubota opened here last year, having previously worked in London at the ultra-famous Japanese restaurants Nobu and Zuma, popular with celebrities including Madonna and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. As one would expect from a chef of such experience, the food is both excellent and innovative. By combining Japanese ingredients and European techniques, Mr. Kubota creates new flavors that both surprise and delight the tastebuds. For example, the deceptively plain-sounding Sushi Plate (¥1,500) includes a spicy variant of tuna sushi, topped with jalapeño and seasoned with specially made onion oil. The menu is international and includes lamb kofta (2 skewers for ¥800) made with Turkish-style grilled ground meat coated in a Bangladeshi-style sauce. From April he will be adding the traditional Swiss dish Raclette to the menu. His Fish & Chips (¥1,350) are to die for! A generous portion of fresh cod deep fried in a light batter and served with handmade chips and malt vinegar.
