Fukuoka Marathon: Showcasing Our Beautiful Coastline

Over the past several years, an increasing number of people in Japan have taken up marathon running and jogging, and many of these runners set their sights on the various regional marathons held throughout the country. These marathons, which aim to bring out the local flavor of the communities where they are held, have become big draws. Now, the cities of Fukuoka and Itoshima have teamed up to hold the Fukuoka Marathon, a new full marathon for citizens that will be held every November. This year’s marathon is slated for November 9.

The race course will follow the coast for 42.195km from Fukuoka to Itoshima. The new marathon will begin in the heart of Fukuoka in Tenjin and pass the sights of Seaside Momochi, including Fukuoka Yafuoku Dome and Fukuoka Tower, before heading into the beautiful pine groves and sandy beaches of Ikinomatsubara. After passing Kyushu University’s Ito Campus, it will follow the coast from Nishi Ward into Itoshima City. The course also passes Futamigaura, a well-known spot for sunsets, and its relative flatness will make for a nice run, even for beginners.

The 12,000 spots for the marathon and 5.2km Fun Run filled up almost immediately, leaving many applicants who failed to win a spot by lottery heartbroken. (For the record, the oldest registered runner is over 80!) There will also be a 5.2km wheelchair race. Additionally, many citizens have volunteered to help with pre-marathon preparations and race day water station duties.

Of course, you can also show your support by cheering on the runners from the roadside. Designated areas for supporters will be established along the course, and there will even be stage performances by cheerleaders and a brass band. Citizens’ groups have worked to beautify the roadsides by planting flowers, and large banners created by local high school students will also be on display. Who knows? There might even be some delectable foods from Fukuoka and Itoshima waiting just past the finish line. So, be sure to catch the race. You don’t have to be a runner to enjoy the new Fukuoka Marathon.
