400+ Taiwanese Staff Relocating for TSMC’s Japan Expansion

The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is gearing up for a significant expansion in Kumamoto, Japan, with a new plant in Kikuyo. This facility is set to be fully operational by the end of 2024, marking a notable advancement in the region’s technological capacity.

Part of this expansion involves the relocation of over 400 Taiwanese personnel to Kumamoto, a number exceeding the original estimate of 320. The transition has already begun, with about 60 support team members having arrived in Japan. They will soon be joined by approximately 350 more, starting in August, bringing the total number of TSMC expatriates over 400. When family members are included, around 750 people are expected to move from Taiwan to Japan.

Alongside the staffing plans, there is a strong emphasis on environmental considerations. Beginning in August, there will be close monitoring of specific elements near the plant, including metals like gallium and harmful substances such as PFAS. This initiative responds to local concerns regarding potential environmental impacts of the factory, with the goal of reducing anxiety among nearby residents. Source: Nikkei
