Traditional Asakura Craft “Amagi Shibori” Designated as Special Prefecture Craft

“Amagi Shibori,” a traditional tie-dye technique from Asakura City, has been officially designated as a special prefectural craft by the Fukuoka Prefectural Governor. This craft, originating in the Amagi district, involves intricate indigo dyeing methods to create various patterns on cotton and other natural fabrics. The technique was once a thriving local industry but saw a decline in commercial production shortly after World War II. Since then, local volunteers and artisans have worked to preserve and revive this unique cultural heritage.

On September 9, the designation ceremony took place, with producers visiting the Fukuoka Prefectural Office to express their commitment to future production. During the ceremony, Fukuoka Governor Seitaro Hattori stated that this recognition aims to promote “Amagi Shibori” both within and outside the prefecture and to help nurture a new generation of artisans.

“Amagi Shibori” is the 37th item to be recognized as a special prefectural craft, joining others like Hakata Dolls and Takatori Pottery. After the announcement, Omura expressed her joy, noting that this recognition honors the efforts of those who have kept the tradition alive and vowed to continue exploring new possibilities for this historic craft.
