The annual controlled burn of grass, called noyaki, in the Aso area started on February 26 this year. Particularly for farmers in the area, the annual spring burn-off is very important as it stops the growth of underbrush and harmful insects. Normally 2,600 hectares of land would be burned but due to the Kumamoto earthquake the area of land this year has been reduced to 2,338 hectares. For safety reasons there will be restrictions on the use of certain roads on March 5 (More Info). Source: Kumanichi, 2/26
