Bird Collision Total in 2007 at Kyushu Airports: 280

After the crash landing of a passenger aircraft in the Hudson River in New York when it collided with a bird, the Nishinippon Shimbun reported there were about 280 incidences of aircraft colliding with birds at the eight major Kyushu airports in 2007. Airports are taking pains to prevent serious accidents due to the collisions, and so far there have been no human injuries or fatalities. These measures were urgently required for the new Kitakyushu airport in particular. About 200 species of birds inhabit an area about three kilometers offshore, and bird strikes were frequent in the first six months after the airport opened.
