Canon Oita announced it had reached agreement with one of its subcontractors, Nikken Sogyo of Tokyo, to pay the remaining 200 million yen on the contracts of those workers dismissed by the latter company due to production cutbacks. Canon Oita will assume the liability for half that amount. It is unusual for a manufacturer to assume even indirectly some of the financial burden to pay the laid-off employees of another company.
