The Fukuoka City government announced it will start inspecting the DNA of the special local product karashi mentaiko (spicy cod roe) to determine if any batches contain more inexpensive varieties of cod. The step is being taken to preserve the overall quality of the product. The initiative for the testing was taken by the producers themselves after some products were discovered last year to have been improperly labeled.
