Dazaifu Tenmangu reopened its main hall for worship on Sep. 19 after a closure of about three and a half years. The shrine’s first major restoration in 124 years included replacing the roof and renewing the lacquer finish. The work took roughly three years and was completed in May, ahead of the 1,125th anniversary of Sugawara no Michizane’s death next year. The temporary hall was then dismantled over about three months, and the surrounding stone paving was prepared for the reopening.
