On November 15, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications officially approved the introduction of double-accommodation taxes for the cities of Fukuoka and Kitakyushu. Starting on April 1, 2020, the two cities and Fukuoka Prefecture will levy new taxes on guests who stay overnight at hotels, ryokan, and other accommodation facilities. Projected accommodation-tax income will be ¥1.5 billion for Fukuoka Prefecture, ¥1.8 billion for Fukuoka City, and ¥300 million for Kitakyushu City. Seeing the start of the nation’s first-double taxation of the kind, the Governor of Fukuoka Prefecture Hiroshi Ogawa commented that he would carefully advise residents and hotel owners about the new system and its purpose.
