Fukuoka Airport Busts Gold Smuggling Attempt

A South Korean man, aged 28, was taken into custody for purportedly attempting to transport around 2 kilograms of gold by concealing it around his abdomen. The individual arrested on suspicion of contravening the Customs Law is Kim Jeong-hyeon, a self-identified part-time employee from South Korea. The police stated that on March 30, Kim allegedly tried to secretly bring roughly 2 kilograms of gold bars (valued at approximately 17 million yen) from South Korea’s Incheon International Airport to Japan’s Fukuoka Airport by securing them around his waist. Kim reportedly confessed to the charges, claiming he believed he could fetch a better price for the gold in Japan. This incident marks the first instance of gold smuggling detected at Fukuoka Airport since 2019, after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Authorities are currently examining whether the gold smuggling was orchestrated and if other individuals were involved in the crime. Source: TNC
