Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale Under Review

The Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale is to be reviewed by the city. The Triennale is a large-scale exhibition of contemporary art held at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (FAAM) once every three to five years. The event was first staged in 1999 to mark the opening of the museum, and welcomed more than 50,000 visitors in three months. Numbers have fallen in recent times. The 2014 Triennale attracted 21,000 people, and drew in revenue of approximately ¥81 million. The city is now looking at developing a new event in collaboration other partners in the region. Officials are looking at the possibility of drawing in support from outside organizations and exploring the possibility of tying in the museum’s twentieth anniversary celebrations with the staging of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
